Cindy Epperson, professor in sociology at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, received the Outstanding Author Contribution Award at the Emerald Literati Network 2013 Awards for Excellence for her chapter “The Evolving Community College Model in the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam,” which was published in International Perspectives on Education and Society.

Epperson said the chapter is an extension and update of her 2010 dissertation, which was a multiple case study qualitative research project.

“I spent a month in the ‘field’ by visiting 11 of the 12 higher education institutions with community college in their name in Viet Nam in 2009,” she said.

Epperson’s research included documenting the Vietnamese community college model with site visits, surveys, interviews and observations.

The letter notifying Epperson of the award came with high praise, including this notation: “Your paper has been selected as it was one of the most impressive pieces of work the editor has seen throughout 2012.”

Epperson was humbled.

“I never expected anything more than a free copy of the book,” she said. “Therefore, the award letter was exciting.”

Epperson expects to receive the award sometime toward the end of 2013.
