Volleyball Takes Step Forward in Loss to Jefferson College

October 09, 2013

Chelsey Key and the Archers suffered a three-set loss to Jefferson College Oct. 9. They travel to Lexington, Mo., Saturday for a match against Wentworth Military Academy.

Entering the final two weeks of the regular season, Archers coach Johnna Kinney had seen a series of improved performances in the first half of the season turn to frustration.

That disconcerting trend turned once again toward the positive on Wednesday. Despite the 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 loss to Jefferson College, Kinney saw a return of many of the positive signs from her team, particularly defensively.

“We had been up and down, and we’ve started to get frustrated,” Kinney said. “We’ve put in some changes in practice routines, and yesterday’s showing against a very good team was encouraging.”

The Archers are in need of more of where Tuesday’s performance came from. While that effort may have come up short against Jefferson, the team remains confident in its ability to compete against other members of Region XVI.

It was only weeks ago that the Archers won a set against longtime Region XVI power East Central College, and were also competitive in a loss at home to Wentworth Military Academy.

Since those games, it had been tough sledding for an Archers team still in search of its first victory of the season.

“It was hard to get out of that cycle,” Kinney said, referencing a recent stretch of 10 games without a winning set. “But we won a lot of those 12 points in each game against Jefferson, and our defense played well.”

The Archers will get another shot at Wentworth on Saturday, before returning home against Lewis and Clark Community College on Monday.
