Team members and coaches of the St. Louis Community College women's basketball squad spent an afternoon performing community service at the Rose Hill House Senior Apartments.

The basketball season does not begin for another six weeks, but with only a few returning players on the roster, Archer women’s head coach Shelly Ethridge is making sure her players are getting to know one another both on and off the court.

During her four seasons at St. Louis Community College, Ethridge has found one of the best ways to develop a team bond is by performing community service projects.

The squad recently spent an afternoon at the Rose Hill House Senior Apartments in Kirkwood cleaning the kitchen and dining room. Players also visited with some of the residents and cleaned their blinds, changed light bulbs and other odd jobs.

“I think it’s important for the kids to understand what life’s about, not just basketball,” Ethridge said.

Members of the team include Abby Hutson, Brandy Ward, Caris Johnson, Debra Holcomb, Emily Fischer, Jalisa Mitchell, Jazmaine Elem, Kalah Martin, Khalilah Morrow, Marshaya Sangster, Nika Ewing, Norrisia Daniels, Tiara Bradley and Zuri Hill.

Ethridge’s assistants – Melanie Marcy, Janey Milligan and Lametria Jackson – also participated.

The Archers open their season Nov. 9 at Lincoln College.
