STLCC-Florissant Valley to Hold Auditions for “Master Harold ... and the Boys"

August 08, 2013

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will hold auditions for “Master Harold...and the Boys” by Athol Fugard at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, and Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Terry M. Fischer Theatre on campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

Roles are available for three male actors, ranging from 15 to 60 years of age. Please prepare a contemporary, one minute monologue (requested, not required). Monologues will be heard first.

Performance dates are Oct. 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. The Oct. 11 performance is sign interpreted.

"Master Harold...and the Boys" is set in Port Elizabeth in 1950. "Master Harold" is what the black employees are ordered to call young Hally, the son of a well-to-do white couple who own a fashionable tea room. Hally wanders into the establishment one day and sees two black male workers  practicing for an upcoming ballroom competition by dancing together. The two employees and Hally exchange kidding rebukes, not meant to offend anyone. But after Hally receives some bad news about his father, he takes out his anger upon the workers. Efforts to smooth out the situation erupt into an all-out racial conflict.

“Master Harold ... and the Boys” is directed by Daniel J. Betzler. Contact Betzler at dbetzler@stlcc.edu if you are unable to audition on these dates.
