Women’s Soccer Ready for Season Opener after Strong Preseason

schedule with a 1-0 loss to McKendree University.

With three strong preseason games behind them, the St. Louis Community College women’s soccer team appears ready to pursue a repeat of last year’s Region XVI title.

The Archers performed well in a 1-0 loss to NCAA Division II opponent McKendree University on Aug. 25 in their final exhibition tune-up. The two teams were locked in a scoreless match until McKendree broke the tie with eight minutes remaining.

“‘Our defense did a superb job,” Archers head coach Juergen Huettner said. “’Apo’ (sophomore goaltender Apolonia Thomas) did a great job, and one thing we found out is that we have a bench. We’re deep and we don’t lose a beat when (reserves) are in.”

The Archers have a challenging early-season schedule, as they will travel to Florida later this week for games against Eastern Florida State College, Cerritos College and Polk Community College. Last year, STLCC returned from their games in Florida winless, but the strong performances against McKendree and NCAA Division III opponents Greenville College and Webster University have given the Archers reason to be optimistic about their chances this time.

“We’re playing three top-notch games in Florida, but I think we have a better team, we’re more well-rounded,” Huettner said. “After our game against McKendree, we’re not scared of anybody.”
