Dobbie Herrion, Academic Support Center manager at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley,  recently was named a Champion For Good by Allstate Insurance Company as part of its Give It Up For Good campaign.

This initiative urges people to share the good in their community by recognizing and highlighting the unsung heroes who dedicate themselves to enriching the lives of others.

“I feel honored, humbled, blessed and flat out shocked to be receiving the Champion For Good Award,” Herrion said. “We certainly never set out to receive any type of special recognition, but to be recognized for making small gestures in the community inspires us to continue to serve and motivate others to make their own small gestures.”

Known for his countless acts of community service and commitment to giving back, Herrion founded Neighborhood Nets, a community development program dedicated to bringing pride back to playgrounds by putting a net on every bare basketball rim in the St. Louis area and eventually the world.

Herrion started the organization two months ago when he saw a group of guys playing on a basketball court without a net.

“I figured I needed to make a difference, knowing how it feels to play on a naked rim,” he said.

And make a difference he did. Herrion says they have put up 60 nets so far, one basketball rim and plan to have a Neighborhood Net in every state throughout the country next year.

“As our net hanging season comes to an end in October, we'll be rolling out our Resources to Rebound curriculum for youth basketball players that focuses on personal development as well as our Recycling Initiative that will collect old nets and recycle, refurbish and redistribute new nets globally,” he added.

Allstate, with the help of Neighborhood Nets and members of the St. Louis community, recognized Herrion during a surprise event to help shine a spotlight on the remarkable stories of good that too often go unnoticed.

At the event, representatives from Neighborhood Nets joined Deborah Johnson, an Allstate agency owner, to recognize Herrion for the positive impact he’s had on the St. Louis community and surprise him with the Champion For Good Award.

This Labor Day, Herrion will attend the Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion in Orlando as a special guest, where he and fellow Champions For Good will participate in a live Twitter chat to celebrate stories of good in the community.

Allstate is encouraging the Twitter community to tweet it up for good by sharing inspirational stories using the hashtag #GiveItUpForGood and connect with others who have dedicated themselves to the greater good of their communities. The Give It Up For Good Twitter chat will take place on Friday, Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. ET. To join the conversation, search #GiveItUpForGood on Twitter.
