STLCC-Florissant Valley’s Student Newspaper Captures MCMA Awards

Writers and contributors to the Forum, the student newspaper at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, earned 12 awards at the 2013 Missouri College Media Association. The Forum competed in Division 4 against other state community colleges, including the Montage at Meramec and the Scene at Forest Park.

Editor Devese Ursery won three awards – first place in news writing, second place in editorial writing, and second place in sports column. Co-editor Sarah Hayes won second place in entertainment review as well as two honorable mentions for feature writing and entertainment review. Marcus McDaniel, an editor during the 2012 school year, won first place in editorial writing.

 

Holly Shanks, Forum newspaper editor in 2012 and now manager of the paper’s online component, won third place for her “Rock Block” regular column, the Forum’s long-running music column. Terence Monroe won first place for his sports column as well as an honorable mention in the same category. Artist Christina Lowe won third place for non-political cartoons. Steve Smith won an honorable mention for the same category.

 

In addition to MCMA awards, the Forum recently won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. Shanks’ “Rock Block” won first place while photographer Bradley Rayford won third place for his photos from a screening for the 2012 film “Think Like A Man.”
