Archers Ready for Region XVI Tournament

While STLCC softball coach Glen Ellis may not be entirely content with where his team currently stands, its recent performance suggests the Archers have more than a fighting chance in this weekend’s Region XVI Tournament.

The Archers closed the regular season with a three-run, seventh-inning rally to take down Mineral Area College 4-3 on Sophomore Day.

Fittingly, STLCC was given the third seed in the four-team tournament bracket, and will face Mineral Area again in the first round. Ellis is encouraged by the positive momentum resulting from his team’s last victory.

“I think it builds confidence,” Ellis said. “Our hitting still isn’t what we want it all the time, but our team, they’re very excited to play. If our bats show up, we’ll succeed.”

Weather will delay the opening portion of this weekend’s events, with Friday’s games rained out. Barring further postponements, the Archers will open the tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. A win in that game would pit STLCC against the winner of top-seeded East Central College and Cottey College matchup.

The teams will attempt to condense the weekend’s schedule and play four games tomorrow, preceding the championship round on Sunday.

Freshman pitcher Nicole Willie (Oakville), who was the winning pitcher against Mineral Area on Tuesday, will handle each of the regional games for the Archers.

“Our team knows it can win,” Ellis said. “If we play like we did in Florida (to start the season), we know they can beat both of these teams.”
