Florissant Valley Presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”

April 08, 2013

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” conceived by Rebecca Feldman, takes the stage at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley’s Terry M. Fischer Theatre at 8 p.m. April 12, 13, 19 and 20 and 2 p.m. April 14. The campus is located at 3400 Pershall Road in Ferguson.

The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” contains music and lyrics by William Finn with a book by Rachel Sheinkin. Additional material is by Jay Reiss.

The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine and produced by David Stone, James L. Nederlander, Barbara Whitman, Patrick Catullo, Barrington Stage Company and Second Stage Theater, earned good reviews and box-office success. It also was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the United States, including a national tour with performances in Canada, and Australian productions.

Admission is free and all performances are open to the public. For more information, call 314-513-4488. Special accommodations are available for persons with disabilities by calling 314-513-4477. The April 12 performance will be sign interpreted.
