Archers Drop Tourney Opener; Play in Consolation Round

Central College in the NJCAA Division II Champion-
ship Tournament March 19.

The St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team certainly knew it would be facing a stiff challenge in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championship Tournament Tuesday.

The Archers faced third-seeded Illinois Central College on the Cougars’ home floor. That challenge lived up to the billing, as the Archers fell 63-43, moving STLCC to the consolation bracket today (March 20).

Early shooting woes forced the Archers to battle large deficits for the majority of the second half. STLCC did though rally to cut Illinois Central’s lead to nine with six minutes remaining, but a pair of turnovers stifled the Archers’ momentum, and Illinois Central utilized the free-throw line to pull away from STLCC in the waning minutes.

Freshman guard Kalah Martin (Kirkwood) was the only Archers player to score in double figures, finishing with 17 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the floor.

The 14th-seeded Archers will look to work their way through the consolation bracket beginning today (March 20), when they face 11th-seeded Chesapeake College, which lost to sixth-seeded Highland College, 69-56 in opening-round action.

STLCC and Chesapeake will tip at 3 p.m. The game can be followed by clicking here
