STLCC men scuffle early, fall to Wentworth in Region XVI contest

February 15, 2013

For the second time in the last three games, a rough showing offensively in the first half led to an Archers setback, as the STLCC men fell to Wentworth, 63-56. The Archers were held to just 19 first-half points, and trailed by 11 entering the break. Despite a strong second-half rally that saw the Archers outscore Wentworth 37-33, STLCC was unable to make up the early deficit.

The Archers were led offensively by sophomore forward Evan Jones (Cardinal Ritter) who finished with 14 points. Freshman guard Travon Williams (University City) poured in 13, and sophomore forward Cameron Hicks (Clayton) added 11. Williams' production has seen a steady uptick in February. The freshman guard now leads the team with 11.9 points per game and has represented one of the team's best outside shooting threats in the past month.

The loss dropped the Archers to 18-9 on the season, and left the team winless on the road against Region XVI opponents Penn Valley, North Central and Wentworth. It also brought pause to a recent resurgence that saw the Archers win three of their
last four games.

The Archers will look to reverse their recent trend against regional opponents Saturday, when they will get their second chance to face North Central. In their previous meeting, the Archers saw a key opportunity to gain a foothold in the regional seeding slip away in a 64-61 loss.

Following Saturday's contest, the Archers will close the Region XVI schedule in the home finale on Wednesday, February 20 against Penn Valley. The Archers will then complete the regular season by traveling to Lindenwood-Belleville before beginning the Region XVI tournament.
