winning streak.

The St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team was not without chances Thursday, but the Archers were unable to finish on a bevy of those opportunities and suffered a 61-48 home loss to State Fair Community College.

“There was definitely a lid on the basket for us out there tonight,” head coach Shelly Ethridge said.

A lid on the rim may be the only explanation as the Archers shot a season-low 24 percent (17 of 71) from the field Thursday.

Freshman Diamond Suggs (Cahokia) led the Archers with 16 points, though she connected on just 6 of 20 shots from the field.

Sophomore guard Shakaunna Futrell (Hazelwood West) finished second among Archers scorers with 10 points, on 4-of-17 shooting. Sophomore Chanese Washington (Mehlville), after scoring 19 points in her season debut against Brevard Community College, collected three points on a 1-for-14 showing from the field.

Thursday also served as the first home game since the Archers lost leading scorer Datona Ball (Quincy, Ill.) for the season with a torn ACL. The loss of Ball means new opportunities—and new responsibilities—for some players. Futrell, whose time on the court dwindled near the end of the first semester, played 22 minutes. One of the leaders of last year’s national tournament team, Futrell could be called on again to produce offensively to offset the loss of Ball.

Thursday also marked the end of an impressive 16-game home winning streak for the Archers, who had not lost at home since Dec. 3, 2011.

The Archers will look to begin a new streak Saturday when they host Cottey College at 1 p.m.
