Having returned from a road trip riddled with sluggish play and unfortunate outcomes, the St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team was in need of a boost. The Archers received that boost Tuesday, in a 92-61 drubbing of Fontbonne University’s junior varsity.

The Archers dominated from early on against the Griffins, scoring a season-best 58 points in the first half.

Five different STLCC players registered double figures in scoring, led by sophomore forward Cameron Hicks (Clayton), who finished with 22. Sophomore forward Evan Jones (Cardinal Ritter) finished with 19, followed by freshman guard Travon Williams’ (University City) 13 points.

The Archers didn’t have many free-throw opportunities and netted only eight points from the line. But it wouldn’t matter, as they drilled six 3-pointers among their 39 successful attempts from the field.

The win for the Archers (15-7) came at the heels of a disappointing three-game road trip, and snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Archers are now 6-0 against four-year junior varsity programs. STLCC has four remaining junior varsity teams on their schedule, starting with tonight’s contest at Webster University. Tonight’s game will precede what will be a crucial regional matchup against Wentworth Military Academy on Saturday. Game time for Saturday is 3 p.m.

Albrecht Nearing 15th on NJCAA Wins List

Tuesday’s win was also the 730th junior college victory for head coach Randy Albrecht, placing him one behind longtime North Idaho College coach Roland Williams for 15th on the all-time NJCAA list.
