Men Sweep Two-Game SWIC Classic; Improve to 3-1

a victory in the opening round of the SWIC Classic
as each scored 12 points in the 63-53 win over
ABCD Prep.

Following a three-point loss to Lincoln College a week previous, it was important for the St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team to rebound quickly.

That reversal in course was achieved Friday, when the Archers knocked off ABCD Prep (Iowa) 63-53, and again on Saturday with a 66-44 victory over Missouri Valley University’s junior varsity.

Four different players scored in double figures for STLCC against ABCD Prep, allowing the Archers to overcome an 8-for-19 showing from the free-throw line. Sophomores Evan Jones (Cardinal Ritter) and Cameron Hicks (Clayton) each scored 12 points to lead STLCC against Missouri Valley.

The Archers’ lack of familiarity with their opponents did not create an obstacle for STLCC, who improved to 3-1 with the two victories. However, playing two games within a 24-hour span this early in the season was a test of the Archers’ physical preparedness.

“We didn’t have much of a turnaround with the Missouri Valley game, but it was one of those games where the cream rises to the top at the end,” head coach Randy Albrecht said.

The wins also allowed Albrecht to deploy his entire bench in each game, allowing the Archers coach to offer valuable experience early in the season.

“We got 12 guys into both games, so that’s important,” Albrecht said. “We got a lot of help off the bench. That’s part of the plan. If you’re going to build your depth, they have to play.”

Friday and Saturday marked the first games away from the Forest Park gymnasium for STLCC this season. The Archers will return home Tuesday, when they host McKendree University’s junior varsity. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
