The Workforce Solutions Group will sponsor a biotech-
nology industry insights workshop Nov. 5 at the Bio-
Research Development and Growth (BRDG) Park.

Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing knowledge-based sectors in St. Louis and is expected to play a key role in shaping the region’s rapidly changing economy. St. Louis is coming of age as a biotech center, primarily in the plant and life sciences arena mainly because of its close proximity to two-thirds of U.S. agricultural production.

St. Louis Community College’s Workforce Solutions Group will sponsor a biotechnology industry insights workshop 8:30 a.m.-noon Monday, Nov. 5, at the Bio-Research Development and Growth Park (BRDG), 1005 N. Warson Road.

Kelly Gillespie, executive director of the Missouri Biotechnology Association, will discuss the current environment and its impact shaping the local economy. Gillespie will examine biotechnology growth and employment at the national and regional level and its ties to the local economy, based on the State of the St. Louis Workforce report for the biotechnology industry.

Ben Johnson, director of special projects at BioSTL, will report on the state and challenge of diversity within the St. Louis biotechnology industry, followed by a conversation on educating the biotechnology workforce, an employer reaction panel and an interactive Q&A from the audience.

Steve Long, associate vice chancellor of the Workforce Solutions Group, and Richard Norris, director of St. Louis Community College’s Center for Plant and Life Science, will examine the data specifically impacting the biotechnology industry gathered from the State of the St. Louis Workforce research.

Registration for the workshop is $49. To register, contact the STLCC Continuing Education department at 314-984-7777.
