November is "Hunger Awareness Month" at Meramec

October 24, 2012

November is “Hunger Awareness Month” at St. Louis Community College-Meramec.

“Hunger Awareness Month” consists of events designed to raise awareness, money and collect food for Operation Food Search.

The month kicks off with a food drive on the Meramec campus and at the South County Education and University Center. Non-perishable items are being collected in blue barrels at each location, with food also going to  Circle of Concern, a food pantry that donates its collections to the St. Louis metro area.

A Virtual Food Drive is also taking place the entire month. Tax-deductible donations are being accepted online via a virtual shopping cart, where people can “shop” for grocery items on a website and pay via any major credit card. All purchase” benefit Operation Food Search.

“Hunger Awareness Day” on Wednesday, Nov. 7, features two events which will be held the Meramec Student Center.

The first, “Cooking on a Budget,” starts at 11 a.m. in the Student Center Commons, and will demonstrate ways to make healthy meals on a limited budget.

The annual “Empty Bowls Luncheon” will be held noon-1:30 p.m. in SC 200-201. For $10, individuals can have lunch and choose a ceramic bowl created by Meramec ceramic students. Attendees who bring non-perishable food donations can enter a drawing for a STLCC 50th Anniversary prize.
