STLCC Faculty Cited as Experts in New York Times Articles

Two faculty members from St. Louis Community College recently were cited as expert sources in separate New York Times articles Oct. 11 and 12.
David Shields, an assistant professor in education at Meramec, is quoted in an article about competing views on competition among children. Shields’ advice to parents is to emphasize cooperation in their games. Shields is co-author of the book titled, “True Competition: Guide to Pursuing Excellence in Sport and Society.”

Terry Cooper, professor in behavioral sciences at Meramec, is references in an op-ed piece by columnist David Brooks about how we think and analyze ourselves and each other today. Brooks refers to Cooper’s book, “Sin, Pride & Self-Acceptance: The Problem of Identity in theology & Psychology,” to discuss how people sometimes detach themselves from others to avoid the feeling of needing someone.
