Archers Competitive Throughout in College of DuPage Tournament

August 27, 2012

Johnna Kinney's Archers impressed early in their first competition this season, defeating Lake County College on Friday, propelling the Archers to a second-place finish within their pool, in the College of DuPage tournament.

The Archers knocked off Lake County in five sets (21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 29-27, 15-12) for their first victory of the year. With youth playing a key role on this year's team, with just three returning players, the Archers did struggle to maintain the momentum from Friday's win, as they dropped matches to Harper College, Ancilla College and Lake Michigan College to close out the weekend. Despite those struggles, Kinney remained largely positive with her freshman-laden program.

Last weekend was Kinney's first look at how her freshmen would adjust to the college game, in particular libero Carrie Latimore (McCluer North) and middle hitter Alex McGlamery (Thurston, Oregon), who figure to see considerable time on the court this fall.

"It was encouraging, but they were nervous all weekend," Kinney said. We have a lot of talent and we just need to put it together. When their nerves showed, their skill suffered, but there was a lot to be encouraged by this weekend. We saw a lot of good things."

After struggling for traction a year ago in early-season tournaments, Kinney's Archers managed to compete closely in the team's three losses, a sign of considerable growth from a year ago. Even so, the Archers' battle with being able to settle in, even after their victory, was a sign of youth, according to Kinney. Next up for the Archers is their first regular season non-tournament game Wednesday, when they travel to Lewis and Clark Community College.
