After Hot Start, STLCC Volleyball Falls to Lewis and Clark

August 31, 2012

Early in the first set of the Archers' three-set loss to Lewis and Clark on Wednesday, it appeared as if STLCC was poised to reel off their own three-set victory.

The Archers led 8-5, and freshman middle hitter Alex McGlamery (Thurston, Oregon) proved herself to be an imposing factor defensively, with three blocks through that juncture. The Trailblazers were without an answer for the Archers' top blocker, forcing them to re-direct their attacks toward the court's perimeter. By maneuvering around McGlamery, the Trailblazers pulled away on the strength of two runs of six points each, winning the first set 25-19.

Following Lewis and Clark's rally in the first set, the Archers would take just three short-lived leads over the final two sets, falling 25-14 and 25-17.

"It was more frustration and tenseness," head coach Johnna Kinney. They started moving the ball around, and we tensed up. After they got a couple points, we lost the momentum and couldn't get it back."
The loss dropped the Archers to 1-4 on the season. For McGlamery, the key is expanding early success over the course of multiple sets.

"We know how good it feels to do that, so it's remembering what we can do and then repeating it for three to five games," McGlamery said.

The Archers will have a quick turnaround this week, as they travel to Springfield, Illinois for the Land of Lincoln College tournament.
