Men’s Soccer Opens Season with 3-0 Loss to SWIC

August 27, 2012

The Dan O'Keefe era at STLCC got off to a rocky start Saturday, as the Archers' new head coach saw his team drop its season opener at Southwest Illinois College 3-0. SWIC was held scoreless midway through the first half, but pulled away and thwarted all Archers scoring opportunities in the second half.

"Our silver lining was the first 20 minutes," O'Keefe said. "We played as well as I could have expected. We kept possession, we played well, and when they scored the goal, we shut down."

O'Keefe referenced the team's depth and conditioning, both of which he expects to improve as the year progresses. Offensively, SWIC maintained control for nearly the balance of the second half, resulting in a tough day of work for freshman goaltender Allen Cox.

"He's a really good young keeper," O'Keefe said of his freshman netminder. "He really saved us by keeping it as close as he did."

Cox was also stellar during the preseason, as he shut out Fontbonne University in the Archers' final preseason game.

The Archers will look to rebound quickly from Saturday's loss, as they play Monday at Lewis and Clark Community College. Game time is 4 p.m.
