STLCC-Forest Park HIT Students Selected for White House Town Hall Meeting

Two Health Information Technology alumni from St. Louis Community College are taking part in a special White House HIT Town Hall Meeting  June 19 in Washington, D.C.

Ahmed Raoof and Velda Jamison, who now both work for the St. Louis County Department of Health, were selected to be part of the Community College Consortia to Educate Information Technology Professionals in Health Care. They earned certificates at STLCC-Forest Park through a special HIT training grant.

They will participate in discussion with senior administration officials and healthcare providers on how health information technology can help improve care quality and patient health.

“I am very proud of our students and the faculty and staff members working as members of our STLCC HIT grant team,” said Dianne Lee, Information Systems department chair, who nominated Raoof and Jamison. “We welcome this opportunity to highlight STLCC’s success in training the workforce of skilled health information technology specialists needed to assist our nation transition to electronic health records.”

Lee said Raoof and Jamison “represent the very best examples of focused student performance in the Midwest Consortium HIT training implemented through St. Louis Community College and their subsequent workforce success within the St. Louis metropolitan healthcare market. Ahmed completed the technical/software support workforce training and Velda, the implementation manager. Velda hired Ahmed after his graduation from the program, and then completed the program herself.”

Raoof is the IT supervisor and Jamison the IT manager and implementation manager at the St. Louis County Department of Health. He earned his certificate in 2011 while Jamison received hers in January 2012.
Jamison said their experience with STLCC’s HIT program has been priceless.

“The real benefit for me was course material which helped me further understand my daily functions as an IT manager and administrator of an electronic medical record system,” she said.

“Overall, I was intrigued with the broad spectrum of the curriculum, the design of the program and the importance of workforce training for each of the roles that function in healthcare offices. This level of knowledge is not only important to healthcare staff, but also helps our department provide useful information to our end-user organizations and their clients,” Jamison said.

Raoof concurred. “The training course through STLCC was excellent – being comprehensive and up-to-date on the current requirements needed to enter the health IT workforce. Students were given an opportunity to learn more about the latest technologies and software used in today’s health care system.”

STLCC is providing training for more than 300 students during a two-year grant period for HIT short-term certificates of completion, and will be completed next month.

Forest Park's Center for Emerging and Advanced Information Technologies, in collaboration with the Information Systems department, is training a skilled workforce for six workforce roles. The nationally developed curriculum focuses on job-specific training for roles that support the implementation of electronic health records as workflow redesign specialist, clinician/practitioner consultant, implementation support specialist, implementation manager, technical/software support staff and trainer.

STLCC is the only Missouri college with this curriculum and one of 17 Midwestern colleges chosen for this grant project. This training is provided via online course work. Tuition assistance was available for each candidate selected for these 12-credit-hour programs that began and ended in six months or less.
