Albrecht Inducted into Region XVI Hall of Fame

June 01, 2012

Randy Albrecht can now add Region XVI
Hall of Fame membership to his long list
of achievements.

If Randy Albrecht were to construct a Mount Rushmore of NJCAA Region XVI basketball coaches, Bob Sechrest of Mineral Area College, Gene Bess of Three Rivers College and Cotton Fitzsimmons of Moberly Area College would all make the list.

With 713 junior college wins, Albrecht may now have carved out space for himself. The longtime St. Louis Community College head basketball coach has been selected as the newest inductee into the Region XVI Hall of Fame. Albrecht, who has coached at STLCC for the past 35 years, is one of only two coaches, along with Bess, to win more than 700 games in the region.

“I’ve followed Region XVI for a long time, and it’s been a great basketball league for a long time,” Albrecht said. “You go back to (coaches) Maury John and Cotton Fitzsimmons, and Gene Bess and Sechrest, and to be put in that company is an honor.”

Like his fellow hall of famers, Albrecht amassed his success largely with one program, and has managed to maintain a high level of success throughout his tenure. This past winter, Albrecht led STLCC to a 22-win season, on par with his career averages. Albrecht was named to the STLCC-Meramec Hall of Fame in 2003, the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004 and NJCAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was named the Region XVI Division II Basketball Coach of the Year 11 times, Missouri Athletic Club Coach of the year nine times and Midwest Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times. His teams have made nine trips to the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

That sustained success and longevity has become a source of pride and comfort for Albrecht.

“Obviously, it’s a lot better situation to stay in a place that you like,” Albrecht said.  “I’ve always had good support with the administrators I worked with and reported to. We always had enough talent to be competitive. I never thought jumping around was a good asset, and I’ve never sought many other opportunities. The grass isn’t always greener.”

Albrecht joins retired Meramec women’s soccer coach Jeff Karl, who won national championships with Meramec in 1991-1992, as 2012 Hall of Fame inductees.
