Executive pastry chef Casey Shiller has proven that he is an artist in the kitchen, but another teaching honor has emphasized his wizardry in the classroom.

Shiller, baking and pastry arts coordinator in St. Louis Community College’s Hospitality Studies program, was named the American Culinary Federation’s Central Region Educator of the Year at a recent ACF conference in Detroit.

“Each day of work poses new challenges, opportunities to further my skills as an educator, and reassures my commitment to be a lifelong learner. The last seven years of teaching at St. Louis Community College, paired with over 14 years as a member of the ACF, has been incredibly rewarding,” Shiller said.

“Students are amazing. Their thirst for knowledge is unwavering. I am so proud to be part of their lives, shaping them into the future leaders of the baking and pastry industry, and am humbled to be honored as the ACF Central Region Chef Educator of the Year,” he said.

Shiller will compete against his regional counterparts (Northeast, Southeast and West) for the national award during a July 14-17 conference in Orlando, Fla. The Central Region encompasses 15 states.

He was named the Forest Park campus’ Co-Teacher of the Year in 2010 and received Missouri Community College Association’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011. He has been at STLCC since 2005 and teaches a range of classes from cake decorating to food science to contemporary plated desserts.

A native St. Louisan, Shiller’s 15-year culinary career includes stints at Trump’s casinos and hotels in Atlantic City and restaurants in Florida, Chicago and upstate New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree in pastry arts and baking from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I.

Last summer, he and teammate Dana Holland, executive chef of Jilly’s Cupcake Bar & Café in University City, won the $10,000 grand prize on the Food Network’s cooking competition series “Cupcake Wars.” They were invited back to participate in “The Battle of the Champions” in January.

Shiller is also director of baking and pastry at Jilly’s, 8509 Delmar Blvd. In January, they opened a satellite location in the Colonnade Center in Des Peres.

Shiller is a producer of KMOV-TV’s local cooking competition show, “Ready Chef Go” and is a frequent contributor to the newsmagazine program, ‘Great Day St. Louis.” He serves as treasurer of the St. Louis chapter of ACF’s Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis.

Shiller and his wife, Anne, live in St. Louis.

The American Culinary Federation is the premier professional organization for culinarians in North America, and has more than 20,000 members in 210 chapters.
