Archers Look to Rebound during 10-Game Stretch

April 09, 2012

Tory Ellis
Sophomore Tory Ellis tops the Archers with 4
home runs and is second with 19 RBI.

This week could shape up to be a pivotal one for the St. Louis Community College softball team.

The Archers entered the weekend having won three of four, pushing their record to 12-15. The .500 plateau is attainable this week, as the Archers prepare to play 10 games over a five-day span beginning Tuesday. Their conference mark of 4-7 also has opportunity for improvement, as six of this week’s games are against Midwest Community College Athletic Conference foes.

The MCCAC has not been kind to the Archers of late. The last STLCC win against a conference opponent was on March 11, a 6-5 victory over Lewis and Clark Community College. STLCC will look to reverse that trend when they face off in a doubleheader Tuesday against Shawnee College at Meramec.

Jennifer Ridenhour
Sophomore Jennifer Ridenhour has upped her
batting average to .333 as her at-bats have
increased in the season's second half.

If the week proves successful, it will likely be due largely to the production of sophomore second baseman Tory Ellis (Fox). Ellis has been a force in the middle of the Archers’ lineup this year, leading the Archers in home runs (4), runs scored (22) and is second with 19 RBI. Eleven of Ellis’ 20 hits have gone for extra bases.

Sophomore shortstop Jennifer Ridenhour (Ritenour) has provided the Archers with an offensive boost of late, as her average has surged to .333 with increased at-bats over the second half of the year.

The Archers’ pitching staff continues to be led by sophomores Samantha Deen (Affton) and Dani Whitehead (Incarnate Word). The pitching pair has combined to cover 153-1/3 of the Archers’ 162 innings logged this year. Deen has allowed a hit per inning while crafting a 3-4 record and 3.76 ERA. Whitehead has accounted for eight of the Archers’ 12 wins while logging a team-high 93 innings in the circle. Deen and Whitehead figure to continue to handle the majority of the innings this week, as well.

This week’s schedule includes a pair of home doubleheaders against Shawnee Community College (Tuesday, April 10) and Cottey College (Saturday, April 14), both at the Meramec campus, and back-to-back road twinbills at Mineral Area College (April 12) and McKendree University (April 13) against the junior varsity squad.  The first pitch Tuesday is slated for 2 p.m., with Saturday’s action scheduled to get under way at 1 p.m.
