The Montage, St. Louis Community College-Meramec's student newspaper, has been recognized as a regional finalist for three Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents these awards to honor the best in student journalism in print, radio, television and online categories.

The Montage placed in the General News Reporting category in the two-year college division for its series of articles on budget cuts; the Sports Writing category for Kurt Oberreither and Spencer Gleason’s article on drug testing for athletes; and the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper category for the spring and fall 2011 issues.

Those advancing to the national finals will be announced at the Region 7 Spring Conference March 30-31 in Ames, Iowa. The first-place entries from each region will advance to the national level, with different panels of national judges selecting one national first-place winner in each category. These winners will be honored at the SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in the fall.
