Patti Ziegler, coordinator of the Information and Reporting Technology program at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, has earned the campus Innovation of the Year Award.

Ziegler’s project, “Synchronous Classes Using Lync,” uses Microsoft Lync for Information and Reporting Technology (IRT), formerly Court Reporting, classes to create a synchronous “live” class combining online and face-to-face students.

Microsoft Lync has proven to be an effective method of delivering courses, allowing interaction between students and faculty and enhancing the test integrity.

“The IRT innovations could not have happened without a dedicated team of professionals, from IRT instructor Peggy Lange to the Center for Teaching and Learning and technical support staff at St. Louis Community College,” Ziegler said.  “These enhancements, including structured assignments, monthly get-togethers, and electronic submission of homework, use technology to improve the student learning experience both on-campus and online.”

The IRT program became certified by the National Court Reporters Association in October 2010.

Other projects that were nominated include “Enhancing Professionalism in Digital Arts and Technology Alliance (DATA) Workshops and Outreach” from Michael J. Burks and Mary Ann Grande, and “Geologic Field Experience in North America” by Carl Campbell.

By winning the Innovation of the Year Award at Meramec, Ziegler’s project is eligible for consideration as the district's Innovation of the Year.
