Archers Close Busy Week with Loss to McHenry College

errant throw soars into center field in the St. Louis Show-
case Saturday. STLCC's 10-game winning streak was halted
Sunday by McHenry.

After his team dropped three straight games to Des Moines Area College to open the 2012 season, head coach Tony Dattoli vowed his team would be much better, and soon. He was right.

Following that season-opening series, the Archers went on to win 10 consecutive games, a run that ended Sunday with a 5-3 loss to McHenry College in the finale of the St. Louis Showcase.

The Archers were stymied by McHenry lefthander Jeremy Ahillen, who hurled a complete game for the victory. Archers right-hander Patrick King was saddled with the loss Sunday, allowing three runs in a two-inning start. Reliever Brian Schwabe allowed two runs over a four-inning relief stint.

Despite the loss Sunday, the weekend certainly benefited STLCC on the whole. The Archers entered Sunday having beaten McHenry 11-1 and 7-2 in their previous two meetings during the showcase, and also swept both games against Milwaukee County Technical College.

“I think it proves a couple things,” Dattoli said. “One, we can win ballgames. To be able to pull off something we did – winning 10 straight – you have to tip your cap to our guys. Today, we might have been a little mentally fatigued. The good thing is, one, we play again tomorrow, and two, we need to overcome it.”

The Archers (10-4) jump back into action today, as they take on Wabash Valley College at Heine Meine Ballpark. First pitch is 2 p.m.
