The Midwest Community College Athletic Conference opener Tuesday against Jefferson College started out well enough for the St. Louis Community College women’s softball team.

After a leadoff double, STLCC grabbed a first-inning lead when sophomore catcher Desiree Toth (St. Louis, Mo.) drove in her fourth run of the year with a sacrifice fly to right.

But that one-run advantage wouldn’t last long, as the Vikings responded with a two-out, go-ahead three-run homer three innings later.

The Archers pieced together a rally in the fifth, when sophomore outfielder Holly Roth (Fox) delivered with a two-out, opposite field single to narrow the deficit to 3-2. But a five-run seventh for Jefferson College put the game out of reach, with a final score of 8-3. Sophomore hurler Dani Whitehead (Incarnate Word) was saddled with the loss for STLCC.

Game 2 proved even more difficult for the Archers, as the Vikings jumped to an early lead against sophomore right-hander Samantha Deen (Affton) and cruised to a 13-0 victory to earn a doubleheader sweep.

This was a rare rough outing for Deen, who allowed just one earned run in her previous 12 innings of work.

The Archers continue to look for momentum with conference play under way. Since returning from spring break, the Archers have gone 1-3 in their last four games. The lone victory came Monday against Olney in a doubleheaders split.

With six of the team’s next eight games at home, the Archers have a chance to rebound this week. They will look to right the ship Thursday (March 29), with a doubleheader against Three Rivers College. The first game begins at 3 p.m. at the college’s Meramec campus.
