Philip E. Smith -- Subdistrict 1

Philip Smith

Philip E. Smith of University City is a retired professor and department chair of foreign language at both St. Louis Community-Forest Park and STLCC-Meramec. He also taught at Washington University and the University of Kansas.

“I feel that St. Louis Community College is the greatest bargain in higher education in the area,” he said. “I taught at large universities for 15 years where graduate teaching assistants teach the freshman and sophomore classes, and the teachers at STLCC are far superior to the teaching assistants in universities. I have 24-1/2 years of experience teaching at STLCC, where I served as chairman of a department and several committees.”

Smith has received several awards from foreign language-related organizations, and served as president of the Missouri Foreign Language Association, the San Luis Rey Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Foreign Language Teachers of Saint Louis.

Smith has taught Sunday school, volunteered as interpreter in Spanish, French and Portuguese for several local municipal police departments, and lobbied the Missouri Legislature regarding educational issues. He also served on several committees to combat spousal abuse and domestic violence.

Smith earned his master’s degree in Spanish from Florida State University, and his bachelor’s degree in romance languages from the University of Kansas.
