Archers Slide Past Saints for 14th Straight Win

14th straight victory.

Over the course of the Archers’ 14-game winning streak, there have been more convincing victories than Saturday’s 54-52 win over Shawnee College. But after defeating Shawnee by a two-point margin for the second time this year, STLCC is proving it can win in a variety of ways.

Saturday’s showdown was a defensive struggle throughout. The Archers managed just 25 points in the first half, but held the Saints to the same total. Sophomore guard Harvey Mills (Henrico, Va.) led the Archers with 18 points. Sophomore guard Toraino Hellems (Oakville) scored 14, and sophomore forward Ryun Davis (McCluer North), the team’s leading scorer for the season with 16 points per game, added 13.

The victory secured a season sweep over the Saints, and is likely to further enhance the Archers’ position nationally as they approach the Region XVI Tournament. The Archers went from being unranked nationally three weeks ago to No. 15 last week after securing Region XVI’s top seed.

The Archers have just two games remaining before postseason play begins. Wednesday, STLCC will play its final road game of 2012 at Lincoln College, a matchup of nationally-ranked teams. The Archers (22-6) will then close out the regular season at home on Saturday against Wentworth Military Academy. That matchup will serve as a preview of the Region XVI Tournament, as the two teams will face each other in the tournament’s opening round.
