Archers' Balanced Attack Leads to Blowout Win
February 27, 2012
|Lauren Maclin was one of four Archers to score in double
digits in Saturday's 80-41 win over Shawnee College.
Depth has been a key component for the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team all season.
Saturday was no different. Sophomore forward Markita Mosley (Oran, Mo.), as well as freshman guards Shakaunna Futrell (Hazelwood West) and Datona Ball (Quincy, Ill.), and freshman forward Lauren Maclin (Ladue), registered double figures in scoring as the Archers breezed to an 80-41 victory over Shawnee College.
Continuing the team’s trend of turning early-season struggles into strengths as the season reaches its final week, the win also marked the third straight road victory for the STLCC.
Saturday’s game was decided very early, with the Archers dominating the paint to grab a 45-19 halftime lead. The Archers (16-9) are now winners of seven straight, and outscored the Saints 166-80 in the two teams’ meetings this year.
The Archers, who completed their slate of home games last week with a 65-59 win over Lewis and Clark Community College, will get their final postseason tuneup Wednesday, when they take on the Missouri Baptist University junior varsity. If history proves to be indicative of their next meeting, the Archers could end the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. The two teams last met Feb. 8 at STLCC, when the Archers notched a season high in scoring in their 97-35 win over the Spartans.
The Archers already have claimed the top seed in the Region XVI Tournament, and will begin postseason play next week.
