Penn Valley.

The St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team certainly is enjoying 2012. Since the turn of the calendar, the Archers have played what has easily been their best stretch of basketball.

After losing its first game of the new year at Arizona Western, the team has reeled off nine consecutive victories.

Saturday’s 84-75 victory at Penn Valley College gave the Archers a season sweep of the Scouts, who have historically been a highly competitive matchup for STLCC. The Archers slipped past Penn Valley by a 78-74 margin in the two teams’ last meeting, on Jan. 28.

The Archers were again led by sophomore forward Ryun Davis (McCluer North), who tallied 21 points to lead all scorers. Davis has been on a tear of late, averaging 21.3 points in his last three games. Sophomore guards Harvey Mills (Henrico, Va.) and Jordan Jones (Marquette) were also productive, scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively.

The Archers maintained a trend by grabbing a 38-33 lead at half, before pulling away in the second half. With the win, the Archers improved to 17-6 on the year, and have a favorable remaining schedule.

The Archers have seven games left in the regular season, and all of them except for one – Lewis and Clark Community College – are Division II or non-NJCAA member programs. The Archers’ odds of reaching the 20-victory plateau appear good. Head coach Randy Albrecht set a personal best a year ago, when he led the then-Meramec Magic to a 29-7 record.

Up next for the Archers is Logan College of Chiropractic on Wednesday (Feb. 15), in the two teams’ lone meeting of the year. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
