If the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team is destined to make another late-season run in Region XVI, the Archers must repeat Saturday’s result: a road victory.

The Archers swept the season series against Cottey College with a 61-49 victory Saturday afternoon, their second win over Cottey in the past three weeks.

Freshman forward Lauren Maclin (Ladue) had the most productive game of her young collegiate career, scoring a team-high 15 points.

Freshman guards Cierra Gaines (Edwardsville) and Shakaunna Futrell (Hazelwood West) also registered double figures in scoring, finishing with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Bucking what had become a trend in the team’s most recent road games, the Archers gained a 13-point halftime lead and maintained it through the second half. Cottey was held to just 22 second-half points.

The Archers’ latest win over Cottey got STLCC back on the winning side of the .500 plateau, improving to 10-9 overall and 4-3 against Region XVI opponents.

As tough as the Archers have been on their home court, Saturday marked their first win away from the Forest Park gymnasium since Nov. 22, when they cruised to a 73-54 win over Lincoln Trail College.

By defeating Cottey, the Archers’ coaching staff also notched its first win at Cottey since joining STLCC in 2009.

With five wins in their past seven games overall, STLCC could be poised for a successful stretch run, with four of its next five contests at home.

Up next for the Archers is the Missouri Baptist junior varsity team at home on Wednesday (Feb. 8). The contest tips off at 5:30 p.m.
