STLCC-Florissant Valley Hosts Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will host its annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, in the Terry M. Fischer Theater on campus, 3400 Pershall Road. The theme is Dr. King’s Unfinished Business: Promoting Economic Empowerment.

Carol Daniel, KMOX-AM radio anchor and co-host of KMOV-TV’s “Great Day St. Louis,” will serve as keynote speaker. Daniel began her career at KMOX  Radio in 1995 as an anchor, reporter and talk show host. She is a 27-year veteran of broadcasting, once working as a cable television host in Kansas City, a campaign organizer, a recruiter for the United States Census Bureau and a substitute teacher.

Daniel has also been honored for her work by the National Newspaper Association, the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists, the Missouri Broadcasters Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Monsanto YWCA and she was named to the YWCA Women's Leader Class of 2005. She also received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission's Distinguished Local Media Award. 

The event will feature the winners of the annual North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) oratorical contest, and musical performances from Olivet Missionary Baptist Church and 3 Central.

The event is sponsored by the college and NCCU. Admission is free and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Special accommodations are available for persons with disabilities by calling 314-513-4551.
