In the first game of a two-game swing to Melbourne, Fla., the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team dropped a 56-52 decision to the Brevard Flame, a member of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League.

The Archers jumped out to an early lead, and took a 28-24 advantage into the half. But the Flame, a semipro team based out of Brevard County, rallied in the second half for the four-point win.

The Archers received much of their offensive production from likely sources, as sophomore forward Shonnisha Davis (Normandy) led STLCC with 15 points. Freshman guard Shakaunna Futrell (Hazelwood West), who is averaging 11.2 points per game, contributed 12.

The loss dropped the Archers to 5-6 on the year. The game was the third game of the year against non-NJCAA member teams. The Archers are 2-1 against non-member opponents.

STLCC concludes its Florida road trip with a game against Brevard Community College tomorrow (Jan. 6). The Archers will then enjoy a lengthy homestand, as four of their next five games will be played at Forest Park. The team resumes conference play during that period, with three of its next four games against conference foes Shawnee College, Lewis and Clark College and Three Rivers College.

The Archers are currently 0-2 against Midwest Community College Athletic Conference opponents.
