Second Half Dooms Archers

After two encouraging performances at home, the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team fell back into a troubling habit in its road contest against North Central College on Saturday.

For the third consecutive road game, the Archers carried a lead into the locker room at halftime, yet saw it evaporate in the second half. They fell 70-64.

The Archers carried a 37-33 advantage into the half, but struggled to find the same level of offensive consistency in the second half. The loss wasted another productive offensive output by freshman guard Datona Ball (Quincy, Ill.), who finished with 20 points, her second 20-point output in her last four games.

The string of difficult road finishes contradicts the Archers’ recent performances at home. After responding to head coach Shelly Ethridge’s more aggressive approach, the Archers have totally dominated their opponents on the home court.

The loss dropped STLCC to 7-8 on the season. The Archers have had a particularly tough time away from their home court, dropping their last five road games, and six of eight overall.

However, that home and road split should bode well for next week, when they play their next two games at Forest Park, Wednesday (Jan. 25) against Three Rivers College and Saturday (Jan. 28) against Penn Valley College. Tipoff for the Three Rivers contest is 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s contest gets under way at 1 p.m.
