Archers Ease Past North Central

Archers' 89-72 victory Saturday at North Central.

January has certainly been kind to the men’s basketball team at St. Louis Community College. The Archers continued their torrid run this month on Saturday, as they breezed past North Central College, 89-72.

The Archers led throughout the contest, taking a 44-32 lead into halftime, and expanding it as the game wore on. Sophomore forward Ryun Davis (McCluer North) continued a recent string of productive outings, leading STLCC with 22 points. Davis has been a force in the past month for the Archers, averaging 20.7 points per game in his last three starts. Sophomore guards Jordan Jones (Marquette) and Toraino Hellems (Oakville) each added 18 points for the Archers, who have won five of their last six games, including three out of four in January.

The 17-point margin of victory was a stark contrast from their win three days earlier against Shawnee College, when the Archers had to hang on for a 58-56 win. With the victory, the Archers move to 12-6, and a season-high six games over the .500 plateau. The recent string of wins could have the Archers soon approaching the NJCAA top 25, which they flirted with in the season’s first month, but were unable to crack.

Whether or not their latest win is enough to propel them into the national rankings, the Archers will have the benefit of their home court in the next week. They return to Forest Park for their next two games, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 25) against Three Rivers College, and at 3 p.m. versus Penn Valley College Saturday (Jan. 28).
