St. Louis Community College closed the book on the fall 2011 season Thursday at the Florissant Valley campus, in a ceremony celebrating the seasons of men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball, as well as all-conference and all-region players for each sport.

Men’s soccer coach Mike Mayberry spoke of a season filled with numerous close calls, as his team had 12 games decided by a single goal, including three in overtime. His team will see more turnover than any other this season, with 13 sophomores on his roster this year.

Sophomores Ryan Essenpreis (Lebanon, Ill.) and Zach Schuchardt (Vianney), and freshman Ricky Schmermund (McCluer) earned first-team all-conference honors. Sophomores Joe Woneswith and Andrew Wood (Mehlville) were honored for their second-team all-conference selections.

The volleyball played its best in the final month of the season, highlighted by a five-game victory over Cottey College in the first round of the Region XVI Tournament on the Archers’ home court.

Sophomores Alison Walls-Lisi (Orchard Farm), Amanda Kearns (Lindbergh) and Chelsea Higgins (Festus) received recognition for being named to both the all-conference and all-region teams. This year’s team graduates seven sophomores from its roster.

The women’s soccer team had a fast start with four wins in its first five games, and also finished with a flourish—the Archers knocked off top-seeded Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods to advance to the Region XVI title game.

Forward Brittany Russell (Columbia, Ill.), and midfielders Kaitlynn Lanciault (Festus) and Katie Foytlin (Belleville East) were honored for being named second-team all-region. Midfielder Lauren Spina (Chicago, Ill.), forward Erica Kaiping (Waterloo, Ill.) and defender Allison Ring (Incarnate Word) were named first-team all-conference. The women’s soccer team graduates eight sophomores off this year’s roster.
