Beta Rho Epsilon Donates Thousands of Books

December 22, 2011

Members of Beta Rho Epsilon, the Wildwood chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, recently conducted a book drive as part of their “Honors in Action” project. The Honors in Action project provides opportunities for learning and growth in two to four of the Society’s Hallmarks: leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service.  Students explore an issue, increase awareness, and try to make a difference in the community by putting a project into action.

The chapter explored the issue of literacy, and resolved  to collect gently used children’s books to donate to children who do not have access to reading materials. They contacted Haven of Grace, a residential facility for young mothers in St. Louis, who were delighted to accept the donation. A few weeks into the drive, the chapter realized they would exceed their initial goal of 200 books by much more. By late December, they had collected over 1200 books for children and adults. On December 15, 2011, members made deliveries of books to Haven of Grace, St. Louis Crisis Nursery and Circle of Concern who were collecting books for their holiday gift baskets.
