Throughout the St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team’s  recent three-game winning streak, head coach Randy Albrecht cautioned that the toughest part of the season had yet to come.

It may have just arrived.

After running off those three straight victories, the Archers fell 76-71 Wednesday at Mineral Area College. Troubles for STLCC began early, as the Archers found themselves with a 15-point halftime deficit at 40-25.

Despite a strong second half offensively, the deficit was too much to overcome. Jordan Jones (Marquette) led the Archers with 15 points. Harvey Mills (Henrico, Va.) and Ryun Davis (McCluer North) added 13 points each. Sophomore guard Toraino Hellems (Oakville), the Archers’ leading scorer for the year, scored 12 points. The loss dropped the Archers to 6-4 on the season.

Up next for STLCC is the Rawlings Shootout Sunday, Dec. 11, when the Archers will face off against Kaskaskia College. The game tips off at 1 p.m. at Forest Park. The two teams met Nov. 19, an 87-80 overtime win for Kaskaskia.

Albrecht will enter the shootout with 697 wins at St. Louis Community College. With wins in the team’s next three games, which also include a trip to Southwestern Illinois College Dec. 17 and a home contest against Lincoln Land Dec. 19, Albrecht could reach the 700-victory plateau before the Archers leave for a two-game road trip to Arizona in January.
