In a season that had its difficulties taking off, St. Louis Community College’s volleyball team saw to it that the year would end on a much more encouraging note.

The Archers rallied from a two games-to-one deficit to defeat Cottey College Friday in their Region XVI Tournament opener. The scores were 16-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-17 and 15-12.  The victory avenged a loss from the previous year, when Cottey eliminated STLCC in the first round of the same postseason tournament.

The Archers’ season ended on Saturday in the Region XVI semifinals when they fell to top-seeded East Central 10-25, 17-25 and 13-25.

Though the Archers bowed out in the semifinals, the postseason victory over Cottey  was a step in the right direction for the program. The Archers have fed off a relaxed, energetic atmosphere during practices and games during the second half of the season, and their postseason win was no different.

“Going into the game, we told them to focus on having fun,” Archers head coach Johnna Kinney said. “And I think they showed that. They were tensed up a little bit, but they came out of it and ended up relaxing and enjoying the whole game.”

match. Higgins was named to the All-
Region  XVI team.

In the fifth and deciding game of the match, Kinney took that emphasis a bit further. While leading 9-7, Kinney called for a timeout. Instead of offering any words of encouragement or drawing up offensive and defensive plays, Kinney simply allowed her team manager to take over.

I didn’t even talk to them, or my assistant coach,” Kinney said. “We just had Bre (McLaughlin), the student manager, go in and make them laugh. It worked.”

The Archers finished their season with six wins, with three of them coming in the team’s final six games entering the Region XVI semifinal.
