The St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team seems very comfortable in tight games.

Entering Tuesday’s game against Lincoln Land College, four of the Archers’ six games were either decided by six points or less or required overtime. Tuesday was no different.

The Archers eked out a 69-65 win over the Loggers, led by sophomore forward Ryun Davis (McCluer North), who finished with a team-high 18 points.

Sophomore guard Harvey Mills (Henrico, Va.) produced his best offensive output to date, following closely behind with 16, and sophomore guard Toraino Hellems (Oakville) continued his string of double-figure scoring games by finishing with 10.

The Archers’ perimeter shooting, which had been an Achilles’ heel in the team’s first two games, proved to be an asset Tuesday, as STLCC drained eight shots from beyond the three-point arc. That production helped offset only 15 points from the foul line for the Archers, a season-low.

The game remained close throughout, with STLCC leading 35-32 at the half. With the win, the Archers improved to 4-3 on the season, including 3-1 on the road.

The win was the 695th for head coach Randy Albrecht at STLCC, eclipsing longtime Louisburg College coach Enid Drake for 20th on the all-time junior college wins list.

The Archers will return to the court Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they host the Missouri Baptist University junior varsity team. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. at Forest Park.
