Kaskaskia Takes Down Archers in Overtime

Following St. Louis Community College’s loss last week to Southwestern Illinois College, the Archers appeared to be in for what could have been a long week.

After falling to SWIC, the Archers found themselves playing their second consecutive NJCAA Division I program when they traveled to Kaskaskia College on Saturday. This time, STLCC was ready.

The Archers hung with Kaskaskia, trailing 33-30 at half. Offensively, STLCC then thrived in the second half, pouring in 42 points and taking a three-point lead with just seconds remaining. That would be the last lead the Archers would see, however, as Kaskaskia guard Desmond Brown nailed a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer to end regulation. Kaskaskia then controlled the extra session, outscoring STLCC 15-8 to seal an 87-80 overtime victory.

The Archers had difficulty containing sophomore guard Quan Conner, who led all scorers with 40 points.

The loss dropped STLCC to 3-3 overall, including 0-2 against Division I opponents.

“Playing two D-I teams in a row probably isn’t good scheduling,” head coach Randy Albrecht said following last week’s loss to SWIC. “But it is what it is. The schedule’s there and you have to play it. The question is whether we’ll learn from this.”

Offensively, the Archers continue to rely heavily on the contributions of sophomores Ryun Davis (McCluer North) and Toraino Hellems (Oakville), who lead STLCC with 17 and 16 points per game, respectively.

The Archers return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Springfield, Ill., to take on Lincoln Land College. The team will then have an eight-day layoff before hosting Missouri Baptist University on Nov. 30.
