The first road trip of the season yielded mixed results for St. Louis Community College.

The Archers split a pair of games in Chicago over the weekend, defeating Kennedy-King College 65-48 on Friday before falling 78-64 to Malcolm X College.

In Friday’s win, the Archers created a bevy of scoring opportunities in the paint as they surged to a 41-28 first-half lead. The Archers added just one three-pointer all day, as the diverse offensive approach used against Logan College in the season opener continued.

Sophomore Shonnisha Davis (Normandy) led all scorers with 19 points. Freshman Shakaunna Futrell (Hazelwood West) poured in 12 points, and freshman Cierra Gaines (Edwardsville) added 11.

Gaines continued her weekend scoring binge Saturday against Malcolm X College, leading the Archers with a career-high 19 points. But that would not be enough as STLCC had difficulty keeping Malcolm X in check in the second half. The Lady Hawks piled up 49 second-half points against the Archers, turning what was a three-point halftime lead for Malcolm X into a comfortable 14-point margin of victory.

The two-game swing in Chicago moved STLCC to 2-1 on the young season. The Archers return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Robinson, Ill. to face Lincoln Trail College.

Sideline Notes

  • Tuesday will mark the last road game for STLCC until Dec. 7, when the Archers play at Mineral Area College.
  • The Archers have had at least three players register double figures in scoring in each of the team’s three games. Gaines is the only player to score 10 or more in all three games.
