Archers Cruise in Season Opener

If Wednesday was in any way indicative of the way this season will turn out for the St. Louis Community College women’s basketball team, this will be an entertaining winter.

The Archers had no trouble at home against Logan College of Chiropractic, jumping to a 43-18 halftime lead en route to an 80-41 victory in their regular season opener.

Six different Archers registered double figures in scoring in the rout. Freshman Megan Hawkins (Fort Zumwalt East) led the Archers with 12 points, on the strength of a quartet of three-point baskets. Freshmen Cierra Gaines (Edwardsville, Ill.), Markita Mosley (Scott County Central), Kirstie Owen (Salem, Ill.), Datona Ball (Quincy, Ill.) and Shonnisha Davis (Normandy) each scored 10 points.

The wide range of scoring threats for STLCC created problems for a Logan College defense that was already limited, due to a roster of just seven players.

Much of the Logan scoring in the second half came as a result of the Archers’ foul difficulties. Even so, the STLCC offense was too much to overcome, as the Archers added 37 second-half points.

The convincing win is a positive sign for a team that is completely overhauled from the 25-win version head coach Shelly Ethridge led last year. All 14 squad members played elsewhere in 2010-11.

The Archers will look to run their record to 2-0 Friday when they play Kennedy-King College in the first of two games this weekend in Chicago. They will also play Malcolm X College on Saturday.
