Archers Win Pair at SWIC Classic

November 14, 2011

Saturday in the SWIC Classic.

For a team that was expected to rely on a couple of top scorers, the St. Louis Community College men’s basketball team has certainly looked balanced over the past week.

In each of the team’s two wins at Southwest Illinois College this weekend—69-67 Friday against Summit Christian Academy and 75-69 Saturday against Fort Leonard Wood—the Archers had four players register double figures in scoring.

“That part’s healthy for our team,” head coach Randy Albrecht said of the team’s diversified scoring attack. “I think it’s a confidence thing for our players. You have to contribute to some victories and have confidence in your ability to score.”

Much of the early contributions have come from the team’s bench. Freshmen Charlie Mueller (Lindbergh) and Kyle Rice (Kirkwood) each provided crucial shots in reserve roles in the team’s Nov. 9 win over Rend Lake College. With minutes piling up this week for guard Toraino Hellems (Oakville) and forward Ryun Davis (McCluer North), the team’s production from its bench became even more crucial this weekend. Saturday, it was freshman guard Enis Mehmedovic’s turn. Mehmedovic (Bayless) drained a game-tying three-pointer in the waning minutes, and added four free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

Getting to the free-throw line was a common theme for STLCC this weekend. The Archers were 27 of 34 from the line Friday, and connected on 33 more attempts Saturday.

“Early in the year, you’re looking for a strength, and one of those is we’ve gotten to the line over 30 times in each game,” Albrecht said. “That’s the best thing offensively we can say about our team.”

Jamese Taylor

victory over Fort Leonard Wood Saturday in the SWIC

The wins moved the Archers to 3-1 overall. They return home Wednesday (Nov. 16) to play Southwest Illinois College. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Forest Park campus. The Archers will travel to Kaskaskia College for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday (Nov. 19).

Though STLCC is off to a strong start, Albrecht knows many challenges remain ahead.

“The schedule gets tougher now,” Albrecht said. “We play some (Division I) teams now, so things aren’t getting easier for us, but this is a nice three-game run we’re on.”

Archers Notes

  • Freshman forward Jamese Taylor (Fort Zumwalt North) registered a career-high 19 points Saturday to lead the Archers in their win over Fort Leonard Wood.
  • The Archers anticipate the return of sophomore forward Darryn Anderson (Hazelwood Central) next week. Anderson has been inactive in the team’s first three games due to a sprained ankle.
