STLCC Offers Study Abroad in Sicily Next March

October 07, 2011

St. Louis Community College will offer a study abroad program in Sicily, Italy, March 8-12, 2012.

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea is known for its natural beauty, mild climate and savory cuisine. Those who are interested in finding out more about Sicily’s fascinating culture and history as well as independent travelers who appreciate learning in a community of others are invited to apply. The program requires ability to walk long distances both on pavement and gravel paths.

Mary Hurley, associate professor in communications at STLCC-Forest Park, will be the faculty mentor for this nine-day journey through the unique culture, art, architecture and archaeology of Sicily. She teaches courses in communication, film and interdisciplinary studies.

“We will examine the interactions between specific Sicilian cultural values and the historical events that have contributed to this system of patronage known as the Mafia, and its persistent representation in films, television and other media,” Hurley said.

The estimated program cost is $3,539 per person, which is based on double occupancy. This includes round-trip airfare, lodging, daily breakfasts at the hotel and eight other meals, one cooking lesson, guided tours, entrance fees and limited luggage handling, gratuities for bus drivers and tour guides, opportunity to explore Palermo at leisure, and limited international emergency health insurance. The price may vary due to taxes, fee and rate increases imposed by outside vendors.

The guided tours include many sites of cultural and historical significance, including Segesta, Erice, Monreale, the Capuchin catacombs, Piazza Armerina, Ficuzza and Corleone.

Expenses not covered include passport, visa, entry/exit fees; gratuities other than tour guides and bus drivers; snacks and some meals; independent touring; travel cancellation protection insurance (strongly recommended); and other miscellaneous items.

Payment options are available. To sign up, contact Mary Hurley at 314-644-9232 or Chris Sulincevski, senior project associate with the STLCC Study Abroad/International Exchange program, at 314-539-5350.
