a three-set match to Jefferson College last night.

Playing a talented and deep Jefferson College team, Johnna Kinney knew Wednesday would be a tough matchup for her St. Louis Community College volleyball team.

The Archers were competitive in the first two games, but saw the Vikings pull away in the third, completing the three-game victory.

“They never gave up trying, which was positive,” Kinney said of her team. “They were outplayed. This was a very good team. We had trouble with our serve-receive, but our hitters were staying aggressive.”

The team’s improved performance was encouraging after the team’s recent four-game trip to Midland, Texas.

“(Our performance) was much better overall,” Kinney said. “The overall effort and energy level was much higher than it was in Midland.”

Looking ahead, STLCC will enjoy just its second weekend off competition this season. The Archers will resume play Oct. 11, when they host Robert Morris College at 6:30 p.m. at Florissant Valley.

Following the Archers’ last weekend off, STLCC returned to competition much healthier and refreshed than the previous week. Kinney anticipates a similar response this time.

“We’ve got some aches and pains from being in the season this far,” Kinney said. “I think we’ll benefit from the weekend off, mentally and physically.”
