Archers Slip Past SWIC

October 05, 2011

Freshman forward Ricky Schmermund scored the lone goal in the Archers' win over SWIC Oct. 4.

Entering Tuesday’s game against Southwest Illinois College, the St. Louis Community College men’s soccer team had seen eight of its first 12 games be decided by a single goal. That trend continued against SWIC, as the Archers managed a 1-0 road victory in the team’s second shutout of the season.

Freshman forward Ricky Schmermund (McCluer) provided all the offense the Archers would need Tuesday, scoring his fifth goal of the season on an assist from freshman forward Tolga Bolen (Turkey).

The win stopped a string of three consecutive losses, and six setbacks in their past seven contests for STLCC (5-8 overall).

The Archers will look to pick up consecutive victories Thursday (Oct. 6), when they travel to Lewis and Clark Community College. The Trailblazers defeated STLCC 2-1 in St. Louis in the two teams’ only previous meeting this season. The Archers return home on Monday (Oct. 11) to face St. Charles Community College in a 4 p.m. match at Florissant Valley.
