Late Goals Send Archers to Double-Overtime Loss

September 28, 2011

Erica Kaiping
Erica Kaiping scored her sixth goal of the season,
but the Archers fell to Lindenwood-Belleville 3-2
in double overtime.

For 24 minutes, it appeared Brittany Russell would be the hero again for St. Louis Community College’s women’s soccer team. Russell (Columbia, Ill.), who entered Tuesday’s game as the Archers’ leading scorer this fall with eight goals, gave the Archers a 2-1 advantage against Lindenwood University-Belleville in the 64th minute.

But STLCC was unable to maintain edge, as Lindenwood knotted the score with just two minutes remaining in regulation, before winning in double overtime, 3-2. Lindenwood netted the winner in the 108th minute.

It was the second lead the Archers were unable to hold, as sophomore forward Erica Kaiping (Waterloo, Ill.) scored the game’s first goal in the 40th minute, but was answered 17 minutes later. Kaiping, whose goal was her sixth of the year, has provided an offensive boost since missing two games early with a concussion sustained in the season opener. Katie Foytlin (Belleville East) recorded assists on both goals for the Archers, and now leads STLCC with nine assists.

Sophomore Meggin Werner (Mehlville) got the call in goal again Tuesday, allowing three goals on nine shots on goal, while playing all 108 minutes. Werner has played each of the last three games in their entirety after splitting time regularly for a majority of the first month.

The Archers continue a three-game road swing this week that will take them to Kaskaskia Community College on Thursday (Sept. 29) before concluding the week Saturday (Oct. 1) at Lake County College.
